Highlight on the Chapter Facebook Contest Winners

Yesterday we announced the winners of the 2013 Chapter Facebook Contest. Today we would like to feature how the winning chapters made it happen!
UF-Logo-copyThe University of Florida chapter is the winner of category 1 (meaning they had more than 250 likes on the chapter Facebook page before the contest started).  This chapter increased their likes by an astounding 358 new people! At the end of the contest, they had a total of 1,482 people that like their chapter Facebook page.
The University of Florida chapter was quite clever in their strategy to get more people to like the page.  They held a contest of their own where anyone who liked the page and wrote on the wall would have the chance to win a pair of tickets to the Florida-Tennessee home football game on September 21.  They even brought their laptops to an information table so people could log onto their Facebook pages and like the page right on the spot. Gaines Hayes, the chapter’s Honorary Members Liaison Officer, explained, “We thought that free football tickets this would be a good incentive to grab people’s attention. After that we decided to do six more random drawings for various $5 gift cards.” And, they didn’t just stop at getting more likes… they have increased the content posted on the page and varied the types of content to keep people involved and interested. Congratulations to The University of Florida chapter!
logo_uofaThe University of Alberta chapter is the winner of category 2 (meaning they had 100-249 likes on the chapter Facebook page before the contest started).  This chapter increased their likes by an exceptional 239 new people! At the end of the contest, they had a total of 387 people that have liked their chapter Facebook page.
The University of Alberta chapter hit the ground running and advertised their Facebook page during Clubs Fair and Orientation Week, as well as during a Meet and Greet Event that introduced new and returning members to the current executive board.  Similar to The University of Florida, they also provided an incentive– the chance to win a Visa gift card for liking the page. They saw a very large increase following this incentive announcement. They continued to update the Facebook page with new events and reminders related to the Golden Key chapter, which will be crucial for keeping their fan base. Great job!
WKU_Tall_2cThe chapter at Western Kentucky University is the winner of category 3 (meaning they had 30-99 likes on the chapter Facebook page before the contest started).  This chapter increased their likes by an impressive 169 new people! At the end of the contest, they had a total of 268 people that have liked their chapter Facebook page.
The WKU chapter’s strategy was to promote, promote, promote.  Members and officers handed out Dum Dum lollipops that had a tag attached that said “Like us on Facebook – WKU Golden Key.” Members reached out to their Facebook friends asking them to like the page and spread the word.  The chapter explained that if they won that they would put their winnings towards their T-Shirt and Book Drive to benefit local schools.
appstate-logoThe Appalachian State University chapter is the winner of category 4 (meaning they had less than 30 likes on the chapter Facebook page before the contest started).  The App State chapter is a brand new chapter to Golden Key.  They started the contest off with a new Facebook page that didn’t have any likes. The chapter gained 111 new likes during the contest!
The chapter heavily promoted the new page to the new members.  They also reached out to their friends and colleagues within the institution and beyond. “We have grown so much as a brand new chapter and we hope that we continue to increase our number of likes beyond this Facebook contest submission,” said chapter president Travis Roberts.
Our congratulations go out again to the winning chapters.  We know they will put their $500 winnings toward great things for the chapter.

Key Chapter Winner Highlight: University of Miami

Key Chapter Winner Highlight: University of Miami

The University of Miami Golden Key chapter is the next Key Chapter recipient that we would like to spotlight this month. During the 2012-2013 academic year, they demonstrated commitment to excellence, as well as character by supporting a fellow chapter.UofMiami
Earlier this spring, Miami Dade College, a university nearby the University of Miami, held their first New Member Recognition Event and requested the help of their neighbors.  The University of Miami chapter arranged for a representative of their chapter to attend Miami Dade College’s New Member Recognition Event to speak about Golden Key and what can be achieved by individual chapters. He also spoke of his experiences as a newly inducted member and how a chapter can successfully develop and grow.
The University of Miami chapter is a strong advocate of cancer awareness- many members have loved ones who have been afflicted by some form of the disease. UofMiami2 For the past three years, they held their own 5k race which has raised a total of over $20,000 to go towards cancer awareness.  During the 2012-2013 year, the chapter partnered with over forty campus organizations for the university’s Relay for Life. They set up a tent and sold popcorn to raise money, and they used the venue as an opportunity to highlight to other people and organizations what Golden Key stands for as well as the mission statement. Several honorary and alumni members stopped by to show their support for the chapter, too. The event was a huge success in that they raised money and awareness for cancer, as well as raising awareness of the University of Miami Golden Key chapter.
Congratulations to the University of Miami chapter for your success during the 2012-2013 academic year, and we wish you the best this upcoming school year!

On Being President of an International Organization

On Being President of an International Organization

By Cecilia G. Manrique, Ph.D.

Image           Who would have thought that a vertically-challenged woman from a third world country could reach this level of responsibility as President of the International Leadership Council of the Golden Key International Honour Society?  When I left the Philippines with merely two suitcases to study in the United States almost thirty years ago, that was the furthest thing from my mind.  I did not grow up wishing I would become President of anything, although President of the Philippines could have been every Filipino child’s dream.  The sense of importance and responsibility in this position trumps the prestige of having been President of the Computers and Multimedia (now Information Technology and Politics) Section of the American Political Science Association in 1995.
A confluence of events made such a Presidency possible for me.  In 1991 when I moved from the instructional computing field back into the realm of teaching political science, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse was fortunate to hire their very first woman Chancellor, Dr. Judith Kuipers, who also happened to be a member of the Board of Directors of the then Golden Key National Honor Society.  One of her main goals was to form a chapter of Golden Key on our campus.  One of my students at that time, Annette Chadwick, was involved in organizing the chapter and asked if I would be interested in serving as the faculty advisor.  I can say that that is one YES (like the Yes I uttered in marriage) that I would not regret.  By 1992 a Golden Key chapter was chartered at UW-L and we were on the road to glory.
Together with my then co-advisor Chris Bakkum and now Carla Burkhardt we built a student organization from the ground up to one of the most successful chapters in the country and the world as evidenced by the Key Chapter Awards we obtained at almost every international conference after our first year as a chapter.  Our students, numbered among the top 15 percent of their junior and senior classes, not only excelled in the classroom but in the field of community service and leadership as well.  We cleaned our stretch of the highway for Adopt-a-Highway.  We collected books for Books for Africa and with the help of Fastenal Corporation delivered them to St. Paul for shipment to various English-speaking countries in Africa.  We collected pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House.  We engaged in volunteer work for the Salvation Army, nursing homes, local schools, literacy efforts, etc.  As a result of our work we have time and again been given outstanding honors including the outstanding advisor and organization ones at the annual Celebration of Involvement on campus.
Membership in Golden Key not only provides our students with leadership and volunteer opportunities, but there are also scholarships, internships and networking benefits that accrue to members.  That is the reason why I enjoyed steering our chapter in that glorious model chapter direction.  Our students also have the opportunity to attend regional and international meetings held all over the country.  So we have taken students to Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Orlando, Atlanta, Scottsdale, Washington, D.C., etc.  The organization has also grown so that we have chapters and members in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, and Dubai.  That is why it is now the Golden Key International Honour Society.
It was during one of these international conferences that Dr. Judith Kuipers had indicated to me that she envisioned me standing in front of the podium as President of the Council.  I just smiled at her and said to myself, “Yeah, right!”  It was in the year 2002 that I tried my hand at running for the position of Secretary of the Council and won.  I completed a three-year term and then ran for re-election.  Due to by-law changes I had the opportunity to run for President before completing the last year of my second term.  I put in my name for the position thinking that my chances were slim with many other candidates.  However, I got a majority of the votes so here I am– President of the International Leadership Council of the Golden Key International Honour Society and Member of its’ Board of Directors.
The position has its sources of prestige and honor.  For the first time my work with the organization was acknowledged at the beginning of this semester in the Chancellor’s address to the university.  I have also had the opportunity to meet, speak with and learn from famous people like Thomas Sutherland, Henry Winkler, Coretta Scott-King and Peter Hillary to name just a few.  And some of their stories have graced my lectures in the classroom.  I have the pleasure of rubbing elbows and locking brains with the most talented minds in academia and the corporate world when I sit in Board of Directors meetings.
Aside from seeing my name and signature on thousands of certificates being distributed to members of the organization which my children get a big kick out of (even more now that it is no longer the Secretary title but the President one under it), the thought of representing the advisors and student members in the more than 300 chapters in 7 countries is a daunting responsibility.  I am their voice and link with the policy and decision-making Board of Directors.  And I take that responsibility very seriously.
So if you are ever invited to become a Golden Key member in recognition of your academic achievement as a student; to become an honorary member because of your status in, and contributions to, your community; or to become a corporate sponsor because of your involvement with potential employees through internships and scholarships do not hesitate to say YES as I did sixteen years ago.  Just like my marriage, I have not regretted a single day of my association with Golden Key and you won’t either.
Cecilia Manrique is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.  She lives in Winona with her husband, Gabriel, who is the Interim Dean of the College of Business at Winona State University. They have two children, Patrick and Michelle.  Patrick served with the 82nd Airborne and was deployed to the Gulf Coast in September 2005, not in 2004.
