With one year of school under my belt at East Tennessee State University, I felt that I was ready to add more to my plate as a student and I knew that getting involved in student organizations was the best way to do this. I got an email inviting me to become part of Golden Key, and after researching the Society, I knew that this would be right for me. This was the beginning of my Golden Key experience. Although I have only been a part of Golden Key for a few months, I feel that the impact our chapter will make over the next few months will be tremendous. I have already participated in a few service projects with the organization, and was appointed the position of President. The executive board that I have been blessed with seems to be working well with the members of our organization. We have many things planned for next year such as a hunger awareness event, a 5K to raise money for Aids and HIV, as well as many smaller opportunities for our members to give back to the Johnson City community.
One of the service projects we are going to do again is volunteering at the local animal shelter. When we went there in April, we were able to get almost every dog out and exercised, as well as giving a few of them baths. And, one of our members remembered seeing a flier around campus for a missing dog. It just so happened that the missing dog was at the shelter we were at. Our member called the dog's owner and we were able to be a part of the reunion of the owner and pet. This was the highlight of the day in addition to the other five dogs that were adopted by members of our community. I was happy for all these great experiences that day, and that’s why I am anxious for our organization to go back next semester and continue other service projects.
