World Heart Day - Sept 26 Go to Chapter

This day has been set aside to increase awareness about heart disease, the warning signs, and steps to take to prevent and
fight it. Some heart facts;
• The heart beats 115,000 times per day
• In 1893 the first open-heart surgery was performed
• The age of an Egyptian mummy which had known heart disease was 3,500 yrs ago
• Our blood vessel system can be an amazing 60,000 miles long
• 1.5 gal of blood/min is pumped by our heart
Things you can do for World Heart Day;
• Know your risk, cholesterol levels, smoking, high blood pressure
• Learn CPR- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
• Know the symptoms of a heart attack- shortness of breath, profuse sweating, nausea, lightheadedness, pain in
the arm, neck, stomach, or jaw, unexplained chest pain, palpitations, numbness
• Call 911 or go to the hospital immediately – faster the treatment, the less damage to the heart
• Take some aspirin while waiting for the ambulance
A heart attack usually occurs when a blood clot blocks or reduces the blood flow and oxygen to the heart. Sometimes
these clots occur when the arteries spasm, or when plague from too much fat and cholesterol builds up inside the blood
vessel walls, narrowing them. This also reduces the blood flow and oxygen to the heart.
