University of Utah, Fill a Backpack, Feed a Brain

For our April Service Project at the University of Utah Golden Key Chapter, we held a children’s book and school supply drive from April 11-14.  On April 15 we volunteered at Wasatch Elementary.  We gave the principal, Mrs. Julie Miller, the donations we had collected and they will go to students in the school who can’t afford books and supplies.   We advertised online with the University of Utah, and local news sources. Check out http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=14983401&cat=2&lpid=&search= for our ad!
We then read to three class rotations: two kindergarten classes and one first grade class.  The children were broken up into groups and each of our six members read to a group of about four students.  After reading with the children for two hours, Mrs. Miller took us on a brief tour of the school.

Ready, Set, Go

Ready, Set, Go

The Northwestern Golden Key Chapter was honored to provide a $200 sponsorship for the Supplies for Dreams, in partnership with CAMP (Chicago Area Mentoring Program), event Ready! Set! Go! on April 2nd, 2011 from 9:30am-4:30pm. The annual Ready, Set, Go! event is a free college exploration day for high school students currently in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) system. Participants visited Northwestern University for the day and partook in interactive workshops to provide students insight into the college experience. A Northwestern student mentor accompanied small groups of participants throughout the event, answered questions and provided general information about attending college. The day  included a college admissions panel where students could inquire about college applications and financial aid, and a public speaking workshop for students to develop their presentation skills. Participants received a 48-page college information packet, a backpack of school supplies, breakfast and lunch, and a t-shirt for participating. The goal of the event was to provide a memorable experience highlighting both the academic and extracurricular facets of college, in addition to giving CPS students some of the tools necessary to acquire higher education.
