Meet the 2021-2022 ICSLS!

Hello Golden Key International Honor Society members! Every year GK elects a new team of ICSLs (International Council of Student Leaders) and we would like to introduce ourselves to you! Please feel free to reach out to any of us with questions or concerns in your region!

Brittany Ladson: Region 5

I am the president of Michigan State University Golden Key for 2021-22 and a returning member of the ICSL team. I am studying medicine in the College of Osteopathic Medicine and rotate at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. I am hoping to pursue a residency in emergency medicine or family medicine upon graduation next year. I am most looking forward to networking with other GK members in my region and collaborating with chapters across the globe!

Lachlan Morgan: Asia Pacific Region

Currently in his final year of a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours), Lachlan started his studies in 2018. He is currently writing his thesis validating the Measure of Early Vision Use (MEVU) with children with vision impairment. Lachlan joined the executive committee of the Australian Catholic University (ACU) chapter in 2019 as Vice-President, and has since seen the ACU chapter to its first gold standing this year as President. He is a strong believer in the importance of community service and using the opportunities you are given to make a difference to the world around you.

Ofentse Phahlamohlaka: South Africa Region

My name is Ofentse Phahlamohlaka. I am currently pursuing my Honours in Accounting at the North-West University in South Africa. After joining Golden Key in 2018, I served as the Treasurer for the Potchefstroom chapter in the 2019/2020 term. With the knowledge and experience gained from serving as a Treasurer, I am currently serving as the Co-Vice President of the Golden Key North-West University Potchefstroom Chapter. Also, as the newly elected International Council of Student Leaders, Southern African Representative. I was selected to attend the Golden Key International Scholar Laureate Program in the 2019 academic year. The Golden Key became more than just a name on my transcript. It has unlocked so much potential in me. This prestigious society has allowed me to grow as an individual and also as a leader. It gave me the real-world experience employer’s demand, lifelong friends, and self-reflection. Apart from serving in the Golden Key, I also served in the REKENMEESTERS ASA subcommittee. I also have a passion for giving back to the community. I was involved in the Promosa Maths Facilitation program, a community engagement initiative of the NWU School of Accounting Sciences, where I dedicated my time with the passion for assisting grades 4-7 learners. Due to my academic capabilities, I served as a marker and supplementary instructor for the NWU School of Accounting Science for 2018-2020. I have also made the list of the Top 500 DHL Gradstar Awards of 2021.

Ugonna Chigbo: Canadian Region

My name is Ugonna Chigbo the Chair of the ICSL and the student representative on the Golden Key board of directors. I am a Masters student at the University of Manitoba in Manitoba Canada where I will be exploring the interdisciplinary curriculum of Disability Studies. Golden Key Spotlight: Rakin Hasan

Golden Key Spotlight: Rakin Hasan

Tapping into your network is a valuable tool for any working professional and Rakin Hasan is the perfect example of how rewarding networking can be.

A Golden Key Alumni, former President of the Macquarie University chapter, and currently a Senior Analyst in the Technology & Controls Team at Deloitte Australia, Rakin Hasan’s journey has been remarkable.

Rakin came from Bangladesh as an international student in 2013.

He says for international students it is difficult to tap into the employment market but with his Golden Key connections, Rakin was able to find employment.

“I went to a lot of the conferences and one of the most exciting was in 2015 at the Gold Coast. That was one of the most helpful summits, because I got my first job from it,” Rakin says.

“I met someone who was a speaker and he was working with one of the Big Four. When I graduated, I stayed in touch with all my Golden Key colleagues, and that person posted a job on LinkedIn. I messaged him, and he said he was happy to refer me.

“Through that networking at the Golden Key International Summit I got my first job. That was a testament for myself that when networking, especially if you can tap into your connections with Golden Key, you can find wonderful things for yourself.”

Staying in touch with his network, Rakin has been involved with many Golden Key initiatives. In 2020, when faced with Covid-19 lockdown and restrictions, Golden Key Asia-Pacific introduced a Webinar series. Rakin lead the initiative and presented the regions first ever GK Talk “Enacting a Beacon for Change with Rakin Hasan”.

“I’ve been a career coach for about five or six years now. I started off in University, and I wanted to help people with resumes and covers letters. I had a side gig going on,” he says.

“It was last year in the pandemic that I wanted to make it free for people.  I put up a post and started giving free career coaching sessions to people who were losing jobs, and to people who could not find jobs.”

It was during this time, Rakin became a CA speaker at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

“Over the past year and a half, every moment I could find free out of work, I would invest in helping people create their cover letter or resume, or prepare for interviews.”

“I would go to universities and talk in front of students and professionals, talking about things that were important, things that would help them directly in their job or their career.”

With all the remarkable things Rakin is doing, it is no surprise he was recently identified by Acuity Magazine as one of the Top 20 under 35 Future Leaders.

“I feel like this was something I was building up to for a long time. It helps me continue to do the things I do well, which is going in front of people and talking and motivating people.

For Golden Key members, Rakin offers the following advice.

“Learn to sell yourself. That is why a lot of the Golden Key events are so important, because that is what they teach you. Yes education is important, but we are all a story and you need to learn how to tell your story. “

“Getting the job is literally a sales pitch and you need to have to perfect that sales pitch.”

GK Scholarships: Hannah Via

Golden Key is delighted to introduce Hannah Via, one of Golden Key’s 2020 Undergraduate Achievement Award winners. Hannah attends the American Public University.

“Winning this award is personal confirmation for me that hard work, dedication, and perseverance pay off,” says Hannah.
Hannah considers herself a master of many trades and pursues academic excellence with ferocity.

“During my time at my University, I have worn many different hats,” explains Hannah. “First and foremost, I have been a student dedicated to my studies, working diligently to obtain good grades and remain on the dean’s list. Second, I have been a student leader, serving in multiple different student organizations, such as Golden Key International Honor Society, the Jewish Student Association, Model United Nations, Psychology Club, Active Minds, Sociology at Work, National Society for Collegiate Scholar, as well as being an active member in other clubs such as Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society, Society for Collegiate Leadership and Achievement, and the Political Science Scholars. Third, I have been a voice for my University’s mission, serving as an Ambassador and speaking on various panels for Leadership, Diversity, and Inclusion.”

Hannah knows her success is not entirely her own and that encouragement and support from those around her have helped her along her path.

“From my professors who encouraged me to pursue my passion for social justice and psychology, to my student organization advisors who worked tirelessly with me to help me become the best leader I could be, to the Office of Student Affairs being there to answer all my questions, this award is just as much as a testament to how much my University has done for me to my own success,” Hannah declares.

Hannah is currently serving as the Vice President of the Golden Key Chapter at the American Public University.

“Being a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society, I can personally speak to how beneficial joining honor societies can be,” Hannah recounts. “I found a group of people dedicated to leadership and academic success, a group that cares about its member. From professional development to advice on graduate schools, my chapter of Golden Key became my virtual home.”

Hannah is thankful for being a member of Golden Key and getting the opportunity to share her experiences with new Golden Key members.

“I am beyond honored to be one of the recipients of the 2020 Golden Key Undergraduate Achievement Award and would like to thank Golden Key for this amazing recognition,” Hannah says.

Thank you for being a part of the Golden Key family Hannah, we wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of social justice and psychology!
