SPARK a Change February 2016 Featured Service Project
This month’s featured service project highlights Howard University who teamed up with Capitol Christian Academy for a Financial Literacy event. The event brought together 30 students with Golden Key executive members as well as a bank executive from SunTrust Bank. The group discussed what financial literacy means as well as analyzed each ethnic group and its financial literacy rate. The group then analyzed various rates across demographics such as home ownership, loan default rate and emergency savings. This experience challenged students to think outside the box and gain an understanding of the importance of a bank in consumer and commercial environments. As a result, students proposed questions as to how banks affect themselves and the purpose of banks. Financial Literacy can be taught through experience, example and communication and there is no better place to start teaching about finances than with our youth.
