2014 Key Chapter Winner Highlight: University of Alabama
In continuance with our 2013-2014 Key Chapter blog series, we would like to spotlight our University of Alabama chapter for receiving this prestigious honor.
One event that the University of Alabama Golden Key chapter holds dearly is their “Remembering April 27, 2011” event. On this date, a deadly tornado swept through the town of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and resulted in one of the largest losses in school history. Of those who were tragically lost, one was a chapter officer, Melanie Mixon. In honor of her and all of those in the community who lost their lives, the Golden Key chapter gathers on the anniversary of the storm each year to pay their respects. The chapter also participated in “Get on Board Day”, which gives student organizations the opportunity to speak to the hundreds of students at the university about Golden Key. Chapter officers passed out flyers, t-shirts and other Golden Key items while educating attendees on the chapter’s service events, scholarships and leadership opportunities. This event also served as an excellent opportunity for the officers to brag about being named the university’s “Most Outstanding Honor Society,” which contributed to chapter member Kim Townsel being awarded the 2014 Graduate School Scholarship for $10,000.
One of the more special events that the chapter participated in was their Halloween Party at Regency Retirement Village. Chapter members and officers gathered at this local retirement home dressed in costumes for a day of mingling with the residents. To make the day interactive for the residents, the members held a costume contest in which the residents were the judges. The costumes ranged from SpongeBob and a lion to an Alabama football player and a deviled egg– to no surprise, the Alabama football player won! The chapter also had cake and candy bags prepared for them to end the day. Although this was only the inauguration of this event, the chapter hopes to make this an ongoing tradition in the fall. The Golden Key members found this to be an incredible opportunity to promote the chapter and university’s image in Tuscaloosa, as well as give back to members of the local community.
Congratulations to the University of Alabama Golden Key chapter for, once again, being named a Key Chapter Award winner!
