IMG_0083Through the efforts of UW-Milwaukee’s GK chapter Vice-President, Vycheslav “Slava” Strogolov, and Better World Books, 559 used textbooks will be reused to help rebuild libraries for students in Haiti. Slava networked with many campus colleges and a local off-campus bookstore to collect 1,109 gently-used textbooks in a little over four weeks. In addition to aiding relief efforts in Haiti, Better World Books estimates 19 trees and more than 10,000 gallons of water will be spared due to the hard work put forth by Slava. Pictured above is Slava with 25 of the 75 boxes of textbooks shipped to Better World Books this past spring.

VIP Panel on Pending Immigration Law July 17 at Golden Key International Summit in Scottsdale

Congressman John Kavanagh; Paul Knost, criminal defense lawyer; and Congressman Ben Miranda, will discuss Senate Bill 1070 on Saturday, July 17, at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale.  The panel is part of Golden Key International Honour Society’s annual Summit.
The panel discussion is open to the media and will be held from 8:30-9:20 a.m. in the Kierland Grand Ballroom located on the second floor of the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa.  Any media interested in attending the panel discussion, please contact Carol White at cwhite@goldenkey.org prior to July 17 for details.
John Kavanagh is a professor of criminal justice at Scottsdale Community College and director of the college’s Administration of Justice Studies and Forensic Science Program.  Prior to his current appointment, Kavanagh taught at Arizona State University and served 20 years as a police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police departments, where he retired as a detective sergeant. He has served on or belonged to many government boards and community service organizations including, Board of Health, School District Advisory Panel, the American Legion and Scottsdale Republican Forum, among others.  For a complete bio, visit www.azleg.gov
For seven years, Paul Knost has served as a criminal defense attorney, handling hundreds of felonies, misdemeanors and DUI cases in Maricopa County.  He provides free consultations to people accused of felony and misdemeanor offenses and keeps affordable fees.  Knost stands behind these three philosophies: every man, woman and child has the right to Due Process and Equal Protection under the law; all people are created equal; and everyone deserves a lawyer who is experienced and affordable.  Visit www.tollesonlawyer.com for more information on Knost.
Elected to the Arizona State Legislature in 2002, Ben Miranda has twice been selected by his peers to serve as Chair of the Arizona Latino Caucus of the State Legislature.  In Nov. 2007, he was awarded the John S. Martinez Leadership Award by the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators.  Miranda’s passion for helping the underserved led him to establish Proyeto Manzana, which is focused on immigrant issues.  He devotes countless hours of free legal advice to people in the Arizona community who could not otherwise obtain legal services.  For a complete bio, visit www.azleg.gov.
